IT skills make anyone more competitive in the 21st century job market. CompTIA Tech+ provides an IT educational foundation for upskilling into a career in IT, regardless of work experience or previous education and training.

This 36-hour Tech+ course uses the official CompTIA curriculum and is taught by experienced and certified professionals. CompTIA Tech+ is a pre-career introduction to basic IT knowledge and skills that helps participants:
  1. Determine if their skills, interests, and aptitudes align with a career in IT.
  2. Narrow their decision-making options when considering an IT career choice.
  3. Create a foundation for the CompTIA A+ training and test preparation.

Who Would Benefit from CompTIA Tech+ Training and Certification?
  1. Career changers, as well as current students considering a career in IT
  2. Professionals working in fields that require a broad understanding of IT
  3. Marketing, sales, and operations staff who want to:
    • improve job performance
    • enhance technology skills

The Tech+ Certification course prepares students to pass the FCO-U71 exam and become Tech+ Certified.  Participants will need study additional hours outside of classroom training and exam preparation time to be successful on the certification exam.  Before registering, please review the “Statement of Learner Commitment".

The required textbook and a CompTIA Tech+ exam voucher are included & provided in class.  Learners are required to take the certification exam within 60 days of the course end date and submit a copy of their test results and certification immediately after to VPCC-Workforce Development, 600 Butler Farm Road, Suite A, Hampton, VA 23666, or fax 757-825-3576; or via e-mail to swaine@vpcc.edu.

IT Concepts and Terminology
    • notational systems
    • computing basics
    • value of data and troubleshooting
  1. Software Development
    • programming language categories
    • programming logic
    • purpose of programming concepts
  2. Applications and Software
    • applications software
    • the various components of an operating system
    • purpose of methods of application architecture
  3. Security
    • confidentiality, integrity, and availability concerns of secure devices
    • best practice methods

Hands-On Lab Experiences:
  1. Database Fundamentals
    • database concepts, structures, and purpose
    • methods used to interface
  2. Infrastructure 
    • set up and install common peripheral devices to a laptop or PC
    • secure a basic wireless network

Class format:
Two 3-hour synchronous online lecture sessions per week.  There will also be an additional 30-minute online synchronous online session to discuss a weekly independent learning project activity (lab work, case study, research or discussion) that must be completed before the next regular lecture session.  While actual project completion time will vary week-to-week and learner to learner, each project is designed to require approximately five to seven hours each week to complete and will serve as the equivalent of 2.5 hours of learning content per week. All assignments align with one or more of the stated certification exam content domains as defined by CompTIA.
